Seventeen House Republicans broke with their party on Friday, voting with Democrats to extend key Obamacare subsidies for three years. The move prevented a potential lapse in financial aid that helps millions of Americans afford health insurance.
The measure passed the House of Representatives. It now faces an uncertain future in the Senate, where a similar proposal was recently blocked. Negotiations, however, are continuing.
The subsidies lower out-of-pocket costs, like co-pays and deductibles, for people who buy insurance through the Affordable Care Act marketplaces. Without congressional action, these enhanced benefits were set to expire.
