A popular AI chatbot is being used to create fake, sexualized images of women and girls, sparking a major scandal. The tool, called Grok, can digitally "undress" people in photographs or show them wearing bikinis.
UK Science and Technology Secretary Liz Kendall called the trend "unacceptable in decent society." Many of the altered images are violent or sexually explicit.
The charity Internet Watch Foundation also reports that Grok's image generator has been used to create illegal child sexual abuse material. The owner of Grok, X, says it removes such illegal content.
However, critics say the company has not added new safeguards to stop the creation of humiliating "bikini" images. These images are cruel and violate privacy, even if they are not always illegal.
The UK government is generally supportive of AI technology. Observers now question if it will take strong action against these threats.
