Toyota Outsells Nissan in Japan's EV Market for First Time

Toyota has become Japan's top seller of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for a quarterly period. This marks the first time it has beaten its domestic rival, Nissan. The shift happened in the three months ending in June. Toyota sold over 13,000 BEVs in Japan, according to recent data. Nissan sold just over 10,000. Nissan, with its popular Leaf model, has long been the leader in Japan's EV sector. Toyota, however, has focused more on hybrid vehicles. Its recent success is driven by new models like the "bZ4X" SUV and a small electric vehicle called the "Sakura," which it makes with partner Mitsubishi. The Japanese EV market remains small compared to China and Europe. But this sales change shows Toyota is gaining ground as it expands its electric car lineup.
