President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil has blocked a law that would have reduced the prison sentence of his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro.
The law, vetoed on Thursday, aimed to significantly cut jail time for certain convictions. Bolsonaro, a far-right former leader, was imprisoned in November.
His conviction was for attempting to illegally hold onto power after losing the 2022 election. The trial was widely seen as a major test for Brazil's democratic institutions.
Lula's veto prevents the sentence reduction from taking effect. The move keeps Bolsonaro's original prison term in place.
