The brutal civil war in Sudan will reach a grim milestone of 1,000 days this week. The conflict has created the world's largest displacement crisis. It has also pushed millions to the brink of famine. Now, a major surge in violence is making the hunger crisis worse. In late December and early January, drone strikes hit central regions of the country. These are the same areas where the threat of starvation is most severe. The United Nations warns that nearly 18 million people face acute hunger. Over 3 million children are severely malnourished. The war began in April 2023. Fighting continues between the national army and a powerful paramilitary force.
