Socialist vs. Machine: Valdez Challenges Brooklyn Boss for Congress

New York Assemblywoman Claire Valdez will run against Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso in a Democratic primary. The winner will likely replace long-serving Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez. Valdez is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). She is a close ally of Representative Ocasio-Cortez. Her campaign will test the DSA's strength against New York's established Democratic Party leadership. Reynoso represents that party leadership. As borough president, he has strong support from local unions and political clubs. This race is a direct clash between the progressive left and the traditional party structure.
