Hong Kong is tightening its seat belt laws, and the changes will affect nearly everyone on the road. Starting January 25, passengers must buckle up on most buses and minibuses if a belt is available.
The new rules apply to public and private buses. This includes franchised, school, and tour services. Drivers will also face greater legal responsibility. They must ensure all child passengers under 16 are properly secured.
Authorities issued a fresh reminder on Thursday. They urged the public to prepare for the sweeping changes. The goal is to enhance safety for all road users.
The updated law closes a previous loophole. It clearly states that passengers must use available seat belts. Failure to comply can result in fines.
