The Australian government has ordered a public inquiry into a deadly knife attack at a Sydney shopping center. The incident, which authorities call a terrorist act, killed six people and injured many others in April.
The independent inquiry will examine the attacker’s background, his time in prison, and his release on parole. It will also review the police response during the event.
State and federal leaders announced the investigation jointly. They stated its goal is to provide answers to the victims' families and the public. The inquiry will have the legal power to summon witnesses and demand evidence.
A former top judge will lead the investigation. A report with findings and recommendations is expected by the end of January.
