Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has ordered a powerful royal commission to investigate the Bondi Junction shopping mall stabbings. This high-level public inquiry will examine the attacker's background, his use of weapons, and police response.
The decision marks a shift. Mr. Albanese had previously resisted calls for such a major investigation. He faced pressure from the Jewish community, as some victims were targeted because they were Jewish.
Royal commissions are Australia's highest form of public inquiry. They have legal authority to compel testimony and gather evidence. This probe aims to provide answers to victims' families and help prevent future attacks.
The attacker, Joel Cauchi, killed six people and injured others in April before police shot him dead.
