The United States is again trying to buy Greenland. The Trump administration is preparing talks with Denmark, which governs the island.
Officials cite urgent strategic concerns. They point to increased activity in the Arctic by both China and Russia. The U.S. sees Greenland’s location and resources as vital for national security.
However, the proposal faces immediate rejection. European leaders have firmly dismissed the idea of any U.S. takeover. In Greenland itself, there is widespread public concern over the renewed American interest.
Greenland is a self-governing territory. It has control over its own resources but Denmark handles its foreign and defense policy. Any sale would require overwhelming local support, which currently does not exist.
