A Minneapolis man witnessed a fatal shooting after a confrontation between a driver and a federal agent escalated on a residential street.
The witness told reporters he heard persistent car horns and a whistle blaring late Tuesday night. When he opened his front door to investigate, he saw a vehicle stopped in the street. A woman was standing outside the driver's side door.
According to official statements, a special agent with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security was involved in an "encounter" with the woman. The agent, who was on duty, fired their weapon.
The woman was struck and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Authorities have not released her identity or details about what led to the shooting.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation. The federal agent has been placed on standard administrative leave.
The street was closed for hours as investigators collected evidence. No other injuries were reported.
