Former President Donald Trump has given his approval to a proposed bipartisan bill that would dramatically escalate economic pressure on Russia, according to U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham.
The legislation, announced by Graham following a meeting with Trump, would impose sanctions on nations that purchase Russian oil. Its most severe measure is a proposed 500% tariff on imports from any country deemed to be supporting Moscow's war effort.
Graham described Trump's support as a major policy shift, aligning the former president with a congressional effort to strengthen Ukraine's position. The bill aims to cut off a key source of revenue for Russia by targeting its international energy trade.
If passed into law, the sanctions would represent a significant hardening of U.S. strategy. The 500% tariff would effectively block targeted goods from entering the American market.
