President Donald Trump is considering an offer to buy Greenland, the White House confirmed on Wednesday. The idea has been met with immediate rejection from both Greenland's local government and Denmark, which controls the island's foreign policy.
Trump has repeatedly refused to rule out using force to acquire the strategically important Arctic territory. This stance has caused shock and anger among Denmark and other longstanding U.S. allies in Europe.
Following a formal request from Denmark's capital, Copenhagen, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated he would soon hold discussions on the matter. Greenland possesses vast natural resources and is gaining geopolitical significance as Arctic ice melts.
