President Donald Trump has called for U.S. military spending to reach $1.5 trillion by 2027. He described the current global situation as "troubled and dangerous."
The proposal represents a massive increase. The planned military budget for 2026 is $901 billion.
Trump's push comes just days after he ordered a covert operation targeting Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. The mission aimed to capture Maduro and bring him to the U.S. to face drug trafficking charges. That operation failed.
U.S. naval forces continue to gather in the Caribbean Sea near Venezuela.
