Three activist groups have launched a constitutional challenge against a New South Wales law that limits protests after terrorist attacks.
The law, introduced after the December Bondi attack, allows authorities to restrict protest actions for up to three months following a declared terrorist incident.
The Blak Caucus, Palestine Action Group, and Jews Against the Occupation ‘48 filed the case in the NSW Supreme Court. They argue the law violates Australia's implied constitutional right to free political communication.
The court summons states the restrictions "impermissibly burden" this fundamental freedom. The case will test the balance between public safety and political speech.
