Gaza’s Elders Relive 1948 Exodus Amidst War

The oldest generation in Gaza is enduring the current war with a crushing sense of history repeating itself. Many elderly Palestinians, whose health is often fragile and mobility reduced, say they feel they are reliving the *Nakba*. This Arabic term means "catastrophe." It refers to the forced exodus of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during the war surrounding Israel's creation in 1948. Now displaced once more, they are among the most vulnerable in a shattered society. Their experience connects today's humanitarian crisis directly to the foundational trauma of the Palestinian people.
