Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has sparked controversy by comparing his team's search for a new defensive coordinator to former U.S. President Donald Trump's past remarks about Venezuela.
Jones made the comparison while discussing the process of replacing former coordinator Mike Nolan. He was asked if he would consider taking a long time to make the hire.
"Sure. I could see that," Jones said. "That's how Venezuela got so screwed up, is they kept waiting and waiting and waiting to do something."
The comment references a 2020 statement by Trump. He suggested he might "run" Venezuela for a short period if the South American nation asked for help.
Jones later clarified he was not making a political statement. He insisted he was only using an "analogy" about the dangers of delaying an important decision.
The Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Mike Nolan this week after one season. The team's defense performed poorly, ranking among the worst in the NFL.
