Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has ordered federal immigration agents to leave the city. He issued the demand after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers shot and killed a woman during an operation.
The shooting happened on Wednesday. ICE says its officers were attempting to arrest a suspect when the woman confronted them with a knife. She was shot and later died at a hospital.
Mayor Frey stated that ICE's presence and actions "do not align with the values of our city." He has formally requested that the federal agency remove its officers from Minneapolis immediately.
ICE has not publicly responded to the mayor's order. Local police are investigating the shooting, but ICE operations are federally controlled. This limits the city's direct authority over the agents.
The incident has reignited local debates over immigration enforcement. Minneapolis has previously declared itself a "sanctuary city," aiming to limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
