A major new film will force France to confront a hidden story from its slave-owning past. "Furcy," set for release in early 2026, tells the true story of one man's fight for liberty.
The film follows Furcy, an enslaved man on Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean during the 1800s. He learns a life-changing secret: he was born a free man. The story documents his unprecedented legal battle to claim his freedom in the courts of France.
This historical drama leads a wave of new French cinema. Also coming is "The Wonderers," a moving family story. Debut director Joséphine Japy will also present a film drawn from her own life.
Together, these works showcase the power of personal and historical stories in shaping the country's upcoming film season.
