Aldrich Ames, a former CIA officer convicted of spying for the Soviet Union and Russia, has died. He was 84.
Ames worked as a counterintelligence officer. His job was to find foreign spies. Instead, he became one of the most damaging spies in U.S. history.
For nearly a decade, Ames sold secrets to Moscow. He gave the KGB, the Soviet security agency, the names of U.S. sources. This led to the execution of at least 10 agents.
The CIA and FBI arrested Ames in 1994. He pleaded guilty to espionage and is serving a life sentence without parole. U.S. officials say his betrayal crippled American intelligence efforts for years.
Ames died in federal prison, according to the Bureau of Prisons. The cause was not released.
