Syria Denies Kurdish-Led Force's Aleppo Claims, Cites Broken Deal
The Syrian government has rejected a recent statement from the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) about the situation in Aleppo. Officials in Damascus called the SDF's claims "false" and "baseless." In a statement carried by state media SANA, the government said the SDF's description of events in Aleppo's Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods was inaccurate. It said the claims do not match the reality on the ground. Damascus also accused the SDF of violating a key agreement. The government stated that the SDF's position contradicts the terms of a deal made on April 1, 2025. While the government's rebuttal did not provide specific details, it strongly challenged the SDF's assertion that it has no military presence inside the city of Aleppo. The SDF is a Kurdish-led militia alliance that controls large parts of northeastern Syria. Aleppo has been divided between government control and Kurdish-led control since the Syrian civil war.
