The United States has issued a private warning to Venezuela's hardline interior minister, Diosdado Cabello. U.S. officials told him he could be the next target if he does not support the country's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez.
Cabello is widely considered the real second-in-command of the regime. The U.S. fears he could sabotage its plan for Venezuela's future.
That plan aims to keep some key figures from former leader Nicolás Maduro's inner circle in place. The goal is to ensure stability during a political transition. A key condition is unrestricted U.S. access to Venezuela's oil.
The warning was reported by Reuters. It follows the seizure of Maduro last Saturday. Senator Marco Rubio has separately laid out a three-point plan for U.S. action.
