Ex-Justice Minister Freed on Bail in $6 Million Fraud Case
Nigeria's former justice minister, Abubakar Malami, has been granted bail after pleading not guilty to money laundering charges. The case involves an alleged $6 million fraud. Malami was a powerful official in the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He served as the country's attorney general for eight years. A federal court in Abuja released him on bail set at 50 million naira (about $33,000). The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting the case. It accuses Malami of illegally moving funds through proxies. The charges are linked to the sale of government property. Prosecutors allege the recovered assets were sold at undervalued prices and the proceeds were laundered. The judge scheduled the next hearing for July. Malami's bail conditions require him to surrender his passport and not leave Abuja without permission.
