The first-ever BRICS naval exercises led by China will start on Friday. The drills are taking place off the coast of South Africa.
The "BRICS" group includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. These joint exercises are a sign of the bloc's growing military cooperation. While details are limited, such maneuvers typically involve communication practice and tactical operations.
The location is significant. South Africa is currently facing diplomatic pressure over its ties with Russia. The exercises coincide with the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Other BRICS members are also participating. However, the drills are being directed by the Chinese navy, highlighting Beijing's leading role in the event.
