Civilians are fleeing Kurdish neighborhoods in Aleppo. This follows a Syrian army declaration that the areas are now "closed military zones." Shelling began on Wednesday.
The violence is the worst since a major agreement last year. That deal merged the Kurds' semi-autonomous region and their military into Syria's new national government, which is led by Islamists.
The fighting breaks a period of relative calm. It threatens to reopen a major front in Syria's long-running conflict.
