US oil companies will demand strong guarantees before returning to Venezuela, according to a leading analyst.
Colin Harding, a consultant and former Latin America editor for the Independent, told FRANCE 24 that former President Donald Trump's push to get US firms back into Venezuela may face resistance.
Harding stated that companies "will want to be given assurances about the legal framework, about security and about conditions" before reinvesting.
Venezuela holds the world's largest proven oil reserves. US sanctions and a complex legal situation have kept major American companies away for years.
The analyst's comments highlight the significant business hurdles that remain, regardless of political efforts to re-engage.
