In Harbin, China, winter mornings can be so cold the air freezes your eyelashes. Yet, residents once woke up on beds that were warm to the touch.
This city of six million people is one of the world's largest and coldest major urban areas. Winter temperatures regularly fall to -30° Celsius. In January, even the warmest days often stay below -10°C.
To survive these extreme conditions, people used a traditional heating method. They built their beds from a special heated platform.
This system, called *kang*, is a hollow platform made from bricks or earth. A small, separate fire would heat the structure. The heat would then flow through the platform, warming the entire bed.
The *kang* was more than just a bed. It served as the warm center of family life during the long, harsh winters.
