Top US and European officials met in Paris on Tuesday. Their goal was to plan long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.
The talks also revealed a potential future role for the United States. Washington indicated it is prepared to lead efforts to monitor a ceasefire. This would happen only if Ukraine and Russia first agree to a peace deal.
Security guarantees are promises of continued military and financial support. They are meant to protect Ukraine after any war ends.
The meeting highlights allied planning for a eventual settlement. All support, however, remains conditional on a peace agreement being reached first.
