A woman convicted for her role in the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot has publicly rejected a pardon from former President Donald Trump. She returned to the scene of the attack to apologize. Pamela Hemphill sought out a Capitol Police officer who was assaulted during the violence. She offered him a personal apology for her actions that day. Hemphill was previously sentenced to 60 days in prison. She had been charged with parading, demonstrating, or picketing in the Capitol building. Her decision to refuse the pardon and deliver the apology in person is a rare public act. It comes more than three years after the riot that disrupted the certification of the 2020 presidential election.
