President Donald Trump has threatened Mexico over its shipments of oil to Cuba. He warned that the Cuban government's collapse is imminent following the capture of Venezuela's leader, Nicolás Maduro.
The threat came after reports that Mexico is helping Cuba cope with severe fuel shortages. These shortages were caused by stricter U.S. sanctions on Venezuela, Cuba's main oil supplier.
"Mexico is sending a great deal of oil to Cuba," President Trump stated. "They won't be doing that for long. The Cuban regime will soon fall after Maduro's capture."
The U.S. President did not specify what actions he might take against Mexico. However, his comments signal a significant escalation in pressure. The U.S. aims to cut off all economic support to both Cuba and Venezuela.
Mexico has not yet publicly responded to the threat. The oil shipments present a direct challenge to U.S. foreign policy in the region.
