China has explained its decision to abstain from a United Nations Security Council vote on a U.S.-drafted resolution. The resolution passed, authorizing a Board of Peace and an International Stabilization Force for the Gaza enclave. In a statement, China said the proposal did not fully address key long-term issues. It noted the draft failed to clearly outline a path toward Palestinian governance or a two-state solution. Despite its abstention, the resolution was adopted by the Security Council. The vote successfully authorizes the new peace and stabilization bodies for Gaza.
