Kazakhstan has announced a major project to build a fiber-optic cable along the bottom of the Caspian Sea. The line will connect to Azerbaijan, aiming to strengthen the country's role as a key internet link between Asia and Europe.
Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin called the plan a "digital bridge between East and West." A fiber-optic cable uses light to transmit data at very high speeds. Laying it under the sea provides a direct and secure connection.
This new route is part of a larger strategy. Kazakhstan wants to become a central hub for data traffic, much like the historic Silk Road was for trade. The project will offer an alternative path for internet traffic moving between China and Europe.
The underwater cable will improve internet reliability and capacity for Kazakhstan and the wider region. It is a significant infrastructure investment in the growing digital economy of Central Asia.
