Provisional results show President Faustin-Archange Touadéra has won a third term in the Central African Republic (CAR). The national election authority states he secured 76.15% of the vote.
The election was held without the main opposition coalition. The group, known as the Coalition of the Democratic Opposition, chose to boycott the process.
Touadéra first came to power in 2016. His re-election extends his rule in a nation rich in minerals like gold and diamonds, but struggling with prolonged conflict. The country has faced violence since 2013 between government forces and various rebel groups.
International peacekeepers and foreign mercenaries remain present in the country, helping to maintain security. The final election results must still be confirmed by the Constitutional Court.
