Coaches at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are criticizing a major change to the tournament's schedule. The event will now be held every four years instead of every two.
The decision was made by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Officials say the new cycle will increase the tournament's prestige and commercial value. It will also align AFCON with other major tournaments like the UEFA European Championship.
However, many team managers strongly disagree. They argue the two-year cycle was a vital showcase for African football. The shorter gap kept players connected to their national teams and provided more opportunities for emerging talent.
The change takes effect after the current tournament. The next AFCON will now be in 2027, not 2025.
