Ukraine has appointed a high-profile Canadian politician to advise on its economic future.
President Volodymyr Zelensky named Chrystia Freeland as an unpaid adviser. Her role will focus on planning for Ukraine's reconstruction after the war ends.
Freeland is the former deputy prime minister and finance minister of Canada. She is a strong supporter of Ukraine and helped design major sanctions against Russia.
Her appointment signals Ukraine's focus on long-term recovery. The plans would only move forward if successful peace talks are held.
Freeland will work with the international working group on sanctions. She will also advise on attracting private investment for reconstruction.
