A senior adviser says former President Donald Trump's Venezuela policy was correct and effective.
John Bolton, who served as National Security Advisor, made the statement in a recent interview. He praised the 2019 decision to recognize opposition leader Juan Guaidó as Venezuela's legitimate president. This move aimed to remove Nicolás Maduro from power.
The policy declared Maduro's government "illegitimate" following a disputed election. The U.S. led dozens of nations in supporting Guaidó. It also imposed severe economic sanctions on Maduro's regime.
Bolton called the strategy a "stunning success." He argued it successfully isolated Maduro internationally. However, Maduro remains in power today, backed by military and foreign allies.
The remarks highlight continued debate over the maximum-pressure tactic. Critics say it failed to achieve its main goal and worsened humanitarian conditions. Supporters believe it crippled the regime and upheld democratic principles.
