Major U.S. oil refineries are preparing to resume imports of crude oil from Venezuela. This follows the Biden administration's decision to ease sanctions on the country's energy sector.
Refining facilities along the U.S. Gulf Coast are especially well-positioned for this change. Many were specifically built to process the heavy type of oil that Venezuela produces.
The temporary lifting of sanctions allows American companies to negotiate new deals with Venezuela's state-owned oil company. However, the U.S. government has warned it could reimpose restrictions if Venezuela does not follow through on promised democratic reforms.
For decades, Venezuela was a top oil supplier to the United States. That trade halted under sanctions aimed at pressuring the country's government. The return of Venezuelan crude would provide these specialized refineries with a key source of supply.
