Nissan's sales in its home market have fallen to their lowest level in three decades. The company sold just 232,419 vehicles in Japan in the last fiscal year.
Industry experts point to one major cause: a lack of new models. Nissan has not launched a major new car for the domestic market in over two years. This has made its lineup seem outdated compared to rivals.
The sales drop is a significant setback. Japan is Nissan's second-largest market, after the United States. The company now holds less than 10% of the Japanese passenger car market.
Nissan says it is aware of the problem. Executives promise a wave of new models will arrive soon. They hope these launches will help win back Japanese customers.
