Venezuela has accused the United States of seeking its natural resources, not democratic change. The charge came during a United Nations Security Council meeting.
The country's envoy, Samuel Moncada, stated that external pressure is driven by greed. "Our country's oil, energy, strategic resources and geopolitical position have historically been factors of greed and external pressure," he said.
The statement directly links potential U.S. military action to Venezuela's vast oil reserves. Venezuela sits on the world's largest proven oil deposits.
The diplomatic clash highlights the core conflict behind the Venezuela crisis. The U.S. calls for the removal of President Nicolás Maduro, calling him illegitimate. Maduro's government claims the U.S. aims for a resource grab under the guise of promoting democracy.
