The United States is preparing to reopen its embassy in Caracas, Venezuela. A senior State Department official confirmed the plans are underway.
"We are making preparations to allow for a reopening should the President make that decision," the official stated.
The American embassy has been closed since 2019. Diplomatic staff were withdrawn amid political turmoil and U.S. sanctions against the government of President Nicolás Maduro.
Reopening the embassy would mark a significant shift in diplomatic relations. It follows a period of increased engagement between the two governments.
The preparations do not guarantee the embassy will reopen. The final decision rests with President Joe Biden.
