A U.S.-backed raid to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was illegal, a legal expert told FRANCE 24.
Claire Finkelstein, a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania, said the operation violated international sovereignty. She also said it infringed on the U.S. Congress's constitutional power to authorize war.
The professor criticized the Monroe Doctrine. U.S. President Donald Trump recently referenced this 19th-century policy. It asserted U.S. dominance in the Americas.
Finkelstein called the doctrine "a political doctrine about Western hegemony." She stated it is "clearly not an acceptable doctrine in a modern world."
