A last-minute injury forced Fiorentina manager Paolo Vanoli to make a change he never intended. He put Moise Kean on the bench.
Kean had just returned from a private family matter. Out of respect for other players who had trained all week, Vanoli originally told Kean he would not be in the squad at all.
But when striker Edin Dzeko got injured late, Vanoli had no choice. He added Kean as a substitute for the Serie A match against Cremonese.
Kean then entered the game and scored the winning goal. The victory gives Fiorentina crucial points in their fight to avoid relegation.
"I have to tell the truth," Vanoli said after the match. "I told him, 'Moise, out of respect for the group, I'm not even going to put you on the bench'."
Vanoli's forced decision became the key to Fiorentina's survival hopes.
