The U.S. government faces a renewed risk of a partial shutdown at the end of January.
Funding for key federal agencies expires on January 30. Congress must pass new spending laws before that deadline to keep them operating.
Failure to agree would force many government functions to close. This is called a shutdown. It would furlough non-essential federal workers and suspend some public services.
The main dispute is between Republican and Democratic lawmakers. They disagree on the total level of government spending. They are also divided on specific policy issues, including healthcare funding.
This follows a near-shutdown in late 2023. Congress has so far been unable to reach a long-term agreement.
If no deal is made by January 30, the shutdown would begin on January 31.
