Hong Kong's newly sworn-in lawmakers have their first major task: electing the president of the Legislative Council on January 8. This vote is seen as an early test of their priorities.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu administered the oaths on January 1. He then addressed the council. Lee urged members to act as "representatives of the public." He told them to put the interests of the nation and Hong Kong above personal political gain.
The coming vote will show how lawmakers interpret this message. Their choice for president will signal whether they support the government's agenda or seek a more independent path for the legislature.
The election follows a smooth swearing-in ceremony. Only a few members had to retake their oaths due to minor errors.
