U.S. authorities have indicted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. They are accused of leading a corrupt government that sent thousands of tons of cocaine into the United States.
The charges were made public Saturday. This followed the capture of Maduro and other top officials in a Venezuelan military operation.
David Smilde, a sociology professor at Tulane University, provided analysis. He studies Venezuela and U.S.-Latin American relations.
The indictment describes a detailed conspiracy. It alleges that for over 20 years, Maduro and his associates used cocaine as a weapon to flood the U.S. and gain power.
