President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has ordered the relocation of Equatorial Guinea's capital.
A new decree changes the official capital from Malabo to Ciudad de la Paz. Malabo is located on Bioko Island. The new capital is on the country's mainland.
The government has been building Ciudad de la Paz, also known as Oyala, for years. Officials call it a modern, planned city. No public timeline for the full move of government functions was given in the decree.
Malabo will remain the seat of the country's oil industry.
