Russia Claims Capture of Key Village in Northeast Ukraine Offensive

Russian forces say they have seized the village of Podoly in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region. The claim was made by Russia's Defense Ministry on Sunday. The reported capture is part of a renewed Russian ground assault in the area. This new offensive has opened a second active front in the region, stretching Ukrainian defenses. Podoly is located near the town of Vovchansk, a primary focus of the recent fighting. Its capture would allow Russian troops to advance from the north. Ukrainian officials have not yet confirmed the loss of Podoly. Heavy battles are ongoing in the Vovchansk direction, according to Ukrainian military statements. The Kharkiv region borders Russia. It was largely liberated by Ukrainian forces in late 2022, but has faced constant shelling. The new ground attack is the largest in the area since that time.
