Venezuela's former President, Nicolas Maduro, is now in custody in New York City. He is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
This follows a U.S. indictment on charges of drug trafficking and weapons crimes. Maduro has denied these allegations.
His transfer marks a significant escalation in the long-standing legal case against him. The U.S. government has accused Maduro and his associates of turning Venezuela into a hub for international cocaine distribution.
Maduro was Venezuela's president from 2013 until his controversial re-election in 2018. Many nations, including the United States, rejected that election result and recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim president.
