Former President Donald Trump now supports a congressional effort to release documents from the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. However, he already possesses the authority to order their release without waiting for a vote.
As president, Trump had the power to declassify and disclose the files. This authority remains relevant because the documents are held by the Justice Department, which is part of the executive branch.
The current congressional push would formally compel the Department of Justice to act. Yet, a president can direct the department to release the records independently of any legislative action. This means Trump could authorize the disclosure directly.
