Iran has called on the United Nations to formally condemn U.S. President Donald Trump.
The demand follows Trump's statement that the United States was "locked and loaded" to respond if Iranian protesters are killed. Widespread demonstrations over the cost of living are currently happening in Iran.
In a letter, Iran's UN Ambassador Amir Saeed Iravani urged the UN Secretary-General and Security Council president to denounce Trump's words. He described the U.S. president's threat as unlawful.
Sina Azodi, a professor of Middle East politics in Washington DC, provided further analysis. He noted that Trump's intervention threat marks a significant escalation in rhetoric toward Iran.
The U.S. has not yet commented on Iran's formal complaint to the UN.
